Guruu FAQs

FAQ

Before you start

Guruu is a platform where people can learn almost anything, and we’re proud to have a diverse community of learners and experts. Even if you’re teaching now, you might find yourself booking a Guruu one day to learn something new!

As a knowledge-sharing platform, Guruu allows you to earn an income by sharing what you know—on your terms. You choose where and when you work, as well as how much you charge. If you have an internet connection and expertise that others value, you can start earning on Guruu.

To become a Guruu, you must be at least 15 years old. For more details on how we manage younger users, visit our Younger Users Information page.

Before getting started, be sure to review our guidelines—certain activities, like completing assignments for users, are not allowed. To understand what’s permitted, read our Community Standards and familiarise yourself with our Terms of Use.

For additional information, we recommend reading our General FAQs, which you can access here.

How does Guruu work?

Only registered users can buy or sell knowledge on Guruu.

To get started, create a free profile, including your details, availability, and pricing. Your bio must accurately reflect your skills, experience, and qualifications, as outlined in our Community Standards, to help prevent payment disputes. Once your profile is live, users can find and book sessions with you based on your expertise, price, and availability.

After each session, users are encouraged to leave a rating and review, helping you build your reputation and attract more bookings.

Guruus must only conduct sessions through the Guruu platform and cannot accept payments outside of Guruu. By signing up, you agree to our Terms of Use and Community Standards, which may be updated from time to time.

How much does it cost to join Guruu?

Creating an account on Guruu is completely free. You only pay a commission when you successfully complete a session—once your learner releases payment, you’ll receive your fee minus Guruu’s commission.

How do I write a strong profile?

Your profile is your chance to stand out and convince learners to choose you. Think of your bio as a sales pitch—it should clearly explain why you're the best fit for their needs.

A strong bio should include:

  • The topics or knowledge you offer
  • Your industry experience
  • Relevant formal qualifications
  • Any awards or recognition
  • Experience working with young people (if applicable)
  • A bit about yourself—your background, interests, and personality

Keep your bio concise, engaging, and jargon-free, ensuring it’s easy for anyone to understand. Let your personality shine!

A clear, high-quality profile photo is essential. Look directly at the camera, smile, and use good lighting. A well-taken smartphone selfie works fine—just make sure it's sharp and high-resolution.

Important: Your profile must contain accurate and up-to-date information. Misleading or fraudulent accounts are strictly prohibited. You are responsible for your account activity and password security. Also, ensure your time zone is correct, as users will book sessions based on your listed availability.

How does payment work?

When a user (learner) books a session with you, they pay in advance, and the funds are securely held until the session is completed. Once your user releases payment—or a dispute is resolved—your earnings are transferred to your nominated Paypal or Stripe account, minus Guruu’s 10% commission.

How does tax work?

When you earn income through Guruu, you are not an employee of Guruu—you operate as an independent service provider. This means you are responsible for reporting and paying your own taxes in accordance with the laws of your country or state.

As an independent provider, you are not entitled to employee benefits such as superannuation or leave entitlements. For more details, please review our Terms of Use and FAQs on employment status.

How does video recording work?

All sessions are automatically recorded, and both you and your learner can download the recordings from your dashboards shortly after the session ends.

We recommend saving your recordings to your local device, as Guruu may delete older videos at its discretion, without prior notice, to manage storage capacity.

Privacy Notice: Session recordings cannot be published or publicly shared without the prior written consent of all recorded parties, except when shared with a parent or legal guardian of a minor. Failure to comply with this policy could result in legal action.

Guruu does not review recordings unless they are submitted as evidence in a dispute or complaint.

How do cancellations and refunds work?

When setting up your profile, you’ll select a cancellation policy, which will apply to all your bookings.

  • If a user cancels a session, any refund will be processed according to your selected cancellation policy.
  • If you cancel a session, the user will automatically receive a 100% refund.

Frequent or unjustified cancellations can negatively impact your reputation and status on Guruu. Late cancellations may also result in penalties, as they make it difficult to book another user in your available time slot.

How much should I charge?

Your pricing is entirely up to you, with no maximum rate—however, a minimum charge of AUD $25 per hour applies.

Your ideal rate depends on several factors, including your expertise, competition, education, experience, location, language, and—most importantly—your ratings and reviews. Many Guruus start with a lower rate to gain experience and build a strong reputation, then increase their pricing over time, but this is entirely at your discretion.

All pricing on Guruu is displayed in AUD. Be sure to review our Terms of Use and Payment Policies to fully understand how payments work.

Do I need liability insurance?

As a Guruu, you operate as an independent contractor or business, meaning you are responsible for managing your own taxes and arranging any necessary insurance.

While liability insurance is not required to use Guruu, you should explore your options to protect yourself and your business. There are many providers available, so it's worth shopping around for the best coverage to suit your needs.

For reference, here are some options we found online (these are not endorsements):

  • Bizinsure (USA)
  • Bizcover (Australia)
  • Compare the Market (Australia)

We encourage you to research thoroughly and choose the coverage that best fits your circumstances.

What is my employment classification?

When you earn income through Guruu, you are not an employee of Guruu—you operate as an independent service provider. This means you are responsible for reporting and paying your own taxes in accordance with the laws of your country or state.

As an independent provider, you are not entitled to employee benefits such as superannuation or leave entitlements. For more details, please review our Terms of Use and FAQs on employment status.

How is Guruu funded?

Guruu is a user-funded platform. We take a small service from users (our learners) and apply a commission to our service providers (Guruus). This revenue funds the platform and its team.

How do I handle negative reviews?

Online reviews play a key role in building your reputation—more positive reviews can lead to more bookings and higher earnings. We understand that receiving negative feedback can be frustrating, but it’s important to stay calm and professional.

Take a step back and assess the feedback. Is it valid? Can you learn and improve from it? If you believe the review is unfair, consider reaching out to the user with a polite, professional message acknowledging their experience and, if appropriate, offering an apology. They may even give you another chance.

Guruu has clear guidelines for reviews outlined in our Community Standards. If you believe a review violates these rules, contact our team at help@guruu.co.
