General FAQs

What makes Guruu great?

Guruu is redefining how people share knowledge.

For Guruus, it’s a flexible way to earn — you can teach from anywhere, set your own prices, and choose who you work with. Creating an account is free, so if you have expertise to share, why not get started?

For Learners, it’s simple and safe. Find trusted experts, book instantly, and learn through Guruu’s built-in video platform — no travel, no strangers in your home, just convenient one-on-one learning made accessible to everyone.

Who can use Guruu?

Anyone can use Guruu to learn something new.

There's no minimum age for learners, but users under 18 must have their accounts created and managed by a parent or guardian.

To become a Guruu (service provider), you must be at least 15 years old, and if you're under 18, your parent or guardian manages your account.

Learn more in our Younger Users Policy.

We're committed to keeping Guruu inclusive and discrimination-free. Read our Community Standards for more information.

How do I set up a profile?

Creating a profile is free and easy:

  • Click Sign Up to get started.
  • If you're a Guruu, add your bio, skills, location, pricing, and availability.
  • If you're a Learner, just add your basic details and time zone so sessions appear correctly.

All payments are handled securely through Stripe, and Guruu never stores credit card details.

Why can’t younger users set up their own profile?

People under 18 can't legally enter binding contracts, which is why a parent or legal guardian must create and manage the account.

You can find full details and setup instructions in our Younger Users Policy.

What protections are in place for children on Guruu?

We take the safety of young users seriously. Guruu provides:

  1. Reviews and Ratings – See what other learners say about a Guruu before booking.
  2. Working with Children Clearance – In some regions, Guruus may hold official background checks. Parents can ask to view this.
  3. Secure Video Sessions – All lessons occur within Guruu's platform; no outside links or apps are required.
  4. Recorded Sessions – Every video is automatically recorded and stored in the learner's dashboard for guardian review.

Parents are encouraged to read our Community Standards for full details on acceptable use and child safety.

Is my personal information safe?

Yes. Guruu uses secure technology to protect your data. We do not sell or share your personal information for marketing.

Read our full Privacy Policy for details on data use and protection.

Can I update my details?

Yes. Log in and go to Settings to update your information or password.

For accounts managed by parents or guardians, some details (like date of birth) can't be changed directly.

How do session recordings work?

Guruu automatically records every session.
Recording is a standard safety and dispute-resolution requirement for everyone using the platform.
It’s also a great way to refresh your memory when your Guruu gives you detailed help — you can revisit key explanations, steps, and examples anytime.

Recordings are available from your dashboard shortly after a session ends, and you can download them for your own reference.
We strongly recommend saving recordings locally, as Guruu may delete older videos to manage storage.

Recording retention timeline

0–30 days (Full-quality recording)

Recordings are kept in full quality so learners, guardians, and providers can review them easily.
This is the period where most disputes or questions arise.

Day 30–180 (Archived in lower resolution)

After 30 days, recordings may be moved to secure archive storage and automatically compressed to a smaller file size.
They remain fully viewable and suitable for:

  • dispute resolution (Tier 0–Tier 2)

  • chargeback defence

  • guardian review for minors

  • safety checks

Playback remains available through your dashboard, even though storage location may change behind the scenes.

After 180 days

Recordings are permanently deleted unless the session was flagged for:

  • safety reasons

  • suspected misconduct

  • child-protection concerns

  • legal or law-enforcement requests

In serious cases, recordings may be stored securely for 5–7 years, following child-safety best practice.

Privacy, safety & sharing rules

  • Recordings cannot be shared publicly without written consent from all participants, except where a parent or guardian reviews their child’s session.

  • Misusing or distributing recordings without consent may result in account suspension, removal, or legal action.

  • Recordings are never used for marketing or public posting.

  • They are only accessed for:

    • dispute resolution

    • safety review

    • chargeback investigations

    • guardian oversight for minors

See our Community Standards for more information on acceptable use.

Does Guruu contact its users?

Yes. Guruu contacts users via email from official @guruu.co addresses (e.g. noreply@guruu.co) and via in-app messages.

If you ever receive an unexpected message, check that it comes from an official @guruu.co address before taking action.

What are Guruu’s safety protocols?

Your account security is our priority.

  • Never share your password — Guruu will never ask for it.
  • Only log in through guruu.co.
  • Do not open suspicious attachments or links claiming to be from Guruu.
  • Contact help@guruu.co if you receive an email that seems unusual.
I received a suspicious email — what should I do?

If you're unsure about an email:

  • Do not click any links or download attachments.
  • Guruu will never request your password or login details via email.
  • Always log in directly at guruu.co, not through external links.
  • If in doubt, forward the message to help@guruu.co for verification.
How does cancellation work?

Both learners and Guruus can cancel a booking, but each Guruu sets their own cancellation policy, displayed on their profile before booking.

  • If a learner cancels, any refund depends on the Guruu's cancellation policy.
  • If a Guruu cancels, the learner receives a full refund.
  • Late cancellations may affect your rating or result in penalties.

For full details, see our Payment Policy.

Can we work outside of Guruu?

We strongly discourage it.

When users work outside the platform, they lose Guruu's payment protection, dispute support, and review system.

By staying within Guruu, both parties benefit from secure transactions, transparent communication, and reputation-building tools that protect everyone involved.

How do disputes work?

If something goes wrong, Guruu can help mediate — but payment disputes are only allowed under specific circumstances.

Simply being unhappy with a session is not a valid reason to withhold payment. Instead, leave an honest review to help others make informed choices.

You can only dispute payment if:

  1. Expectations were clearly set in writing before the session, and the Guruu did not deliver what was agreed.
  2. There was a clear breach of our Community Standards (for example, inappropriate behaviour or misconduct).
  3. A technical issue on Guruu's platform — not the user's internet or device — prevented the session from taking place.

All disputes are reviewed case-by-case. Guruu may review communication records or recordings to determine a fair outcome.

Our mediation decisions are final.

How is Guruu funded?

Guruu is a user-funded platform.

We charge a small service fee to learners and a commission from Guruus.

This supports platform maintenance, technology improvements, and secure payment processing for all users.

Young users FAQs

Guruu's Policy for Younger Users

🛡️ Safety for every age – Guardian-managed accounts and recorded sessions make Guruu a trusted space for young learners.

Guruu welcomes learners of all ages. To keep young people safe and legally protected, anyone under 18 must use a guardian-managed account. This ensures transparency, appropriate oversight, and compliance with payment and contract law while enabling young people to learn and teach confidently on the platform.

Before your child uses Guruu, we strongly encourage you to read this entire page and guide them through how the platform works, including:
* how sessions begin and end
* what happens after a session
* how “Pay Now”, “Dispute”, and “Do Nothing” work
* how to stay safe when meeting online
* what to do if anything feels uncomfortable
This helps set expectations and ensures your child feels supported and empowered every step of the way.

1. How to Choose a Guruu (Recommended for Guardians)

To help your child have a positive and safe experience, we recommend reviewing a Guruu’s profile together before booking. Look for:

  • Experience with young learners. Choose Guruus who specifically indicate they work with children or teens.
  • Qualifications or checks. Some Guruus may display information such as teaching registration, tutoring experience, Working With Children Checks (WWCC) or equivalents
or other specialist skills relevant to your child’s needs. Tip: If a Guruu states they hold a clearance or qualification, you may politely request to sight it for peace of mind.
  • Communication style & approach. Read their profile and introduction to ensure they communicate clearly, their teaching approach aligns with your child’s needs, and they are comfortable with your child’s age group.
  • Session expectations. Encourage your child to ask before booking (a) What will we cover? (b) What should I bring? (c) What happens if I’m unsure or need help? (d) How do we decide when the session is complete? This builds confidence and creates a shared understanding between Guruu, guardian, and learner.

2. Who Can Use Guruu

Learners (any age)
There is no minimum age for learning on Guruu.
A parent or legal guardian must:
* create and manage the account
* approve and manage bookings
* oversee platform communication
* review session recordings
* ensure the child complies with our Terms, Community Standards and other platform policies
A parent or legal guardian must be 18 years or older to create or manage a young user account.

Guruus (service providers aged 15–17)
Young people aged 15 years or older can offer services as Guruus.
To protect both learners and teachers:
* A guardian must create and manage the Guruu account
* Payments are made into a guardian-owned Stripe account
* The guardian is legally responsible for all financial and tax matters
* The young Guruu manages services, profile, availability, and teaching
This structure keeps young people safe while allowing them to earn and share their skills responsibly.
The guardian responsible for the account must be at least 18 years old and ensuring compliance with our Terms, Community Standards and other platform policies.

3. Creating an Account for a Younger Use

Setting up a young user account is simple.

Step 1 — Guardian account
A parent/guardian creates their own Guruu account first. Noe: only adults aged 18+ can serve as guardians on Guruu.

Step 2 — Add a young user
Go to:
Settings → Family Accounts → Add a Young User
Choose either:
* Learner Account (any age)
* Minor Guruu Account (ages 15–17)

Step 3 — Enter details
You will be asked for:
* name
* optional email
* date of birth (cannot be changed later)

DOB is used for:
* correct permissions
* safety controls
* automatic 18th-birthday transition
* payment eligibility rules

Verification for Minor Guruus
For Guruus aged 15–17:
* Guardians attest to the young person’s date of birth
* Guardians must complete Stripe’s identity verification because the payout account is held in the guardian’s name. Stripe only permits connected accounts for individuals aged 18 or older.

Guardian Responsibilities
Account Security & Password Safety
* Guardians and minors are responsible for keeping their Guruu login details and passwords secure.
* Guruu staff will never ask for your password.
* If you believe your account has been accessed without permission, please reset your password immediately.

Password Reset Instructions
If you need to reset your password:
* Go to Settings → Security → Change Password, or
* On the login screen, click “Forgot password?” to receive a secure reset link.

Payment Safety
Guruu does not store or process credit card numbers. All payment details are handled securely by Stripe, our PCI-compliant payment partner. This means we never see or store your full credit card information.

4. What Young Users Can and Can’t Request

Guruu supports real learning and confidence-building.

What Guruus can help with
* explaining concepts
* walking through examples
* reviewing homework questions
* helping plan or structure assignments
* reviewing drafts and giving feedback
* teaching study and exam skills
* skill practice and coaching

Requests a Guruu may decline
Guruus may choose not to:
* complete homework or assignments for submission
* write essays or projects for a learner
* assist with or take tests/exams
* generate work the learner intends to submit as their own
This protects academic integrity and encourages genuine learning.

Guruus can still fully support the learning process by:
* teaching underlying concepts
* demonstrating similar problems
* helping brainstorm and structure ideas
* reviewing drafts
* guiding learners through the steps

A Friendly Note
If a Guruu declines to complete homework for a learner, this is normal and not considered poor service.
It is not a basis for a refund or dispute.

5. Safety, Privacy & Communication for Users Under 18

Communication Visibility
To ensure safe participation:
* Guardians can view all messages
* Guardians receive copies of platform notifications
* Guruus should direct administrative or scheduling questions to the guardian
* Minors should not share personal contact details

Session Recordings
All sessions are:
* automatically recorded
* securely stored
* available on the guardian dashboard within ~15 minutes

Recording retention
Recordings are kept for 30 days, unless flagged for investigation under Guruu’s Safety & Compliance Policy.

Privacy Protection for Young Users
Guruu is committed to protecting the personal information of minors.
We:
* do not sell or share personal data of users under 18
* store recordings securely for safety purposes only
* allow guardians to access their child’s data at any time
* handle all data in accordance with our Privacy Policy
Guardians may inquire about deletion of their child’s data at any time.

Despite our safety features, policies, and monitoring tools, a parent or guardian remains ultimately responsible for a child’s wellbeing and supervision while using Guruu.

6. Working With Children Checks (WWCC) & Qualifications

Guruus may indicate whether they hold a Working With Children Check (WWCC) or equivalent clearance.

Are checks mandatory?
Not currently, as requirements vary across regions and subjects.

Should families prefer Guruus with checks?
Yes — especially for younger learners.

How guardians can verify checks
If a Guruu states they hold a WWCC or equivalent, guardians may:
✔ request to view the clearance directly

✔ ask for a certification or document number

✔ verify it with their local authority (where applicable)
A Guruus who references a WWCC is expected to provide reasonable proof when asked.

7. How to Report a Safety Concern

Your child’s safety is our highest priority.

🛑 First:  Teach Your Child What Happens at the End of a Session
Before your child uses Guruu, it’s important they understand what to do when a session ends — especially if something didn’t go well. We recommend reviewing these steps together:

1. Ending the Session
At the end of every video call, your child should click “End Session.”
This closes the room and brings up the post-session screen.

2. They will see three options
After a session finishes, the learner is shown:
* Pay Now
(Releases payment to the Guruu in 24 hours)
* Dispute
(Freezes the payment while an issue is reviewed)
* Do Nothing
(If no action is taken, payment is released automatically after the safety window)

3. If there is any problem, your child should NOT click “Pay Now”
Instead, teach them to:
* Click “Do Nothing”,
* Tell you what happened,
* And let you decide whether to escalate the issue.
This protects both of you and ensures you can review the session or raise concerns before money is released.

4. What happens if no action is taken
If neither Pay Now nor Dispute is selected:
* After 72 hours, the system assumes the session was completed normally
* At 96 hours, payment is automatically released to the Guruu
* This automatic payment is non-refundable, so it’s important your child knows not to click Pay Now if they had a problem
This default flow ensures fairness and encourages quick follow-up when something feels wrong.

Report a safety issue directly from the guardian dashboard (recommended)
Log in →
Open Session History or Messages →
Select the relevant session →
Click “Report a Safety Concern”
This automatically includes:
* recording reference
* chat history
* timestamps
* booking details
and alerts our team immediately.

If you can’t access your account
Email help@guruu.co
Subject: URGENT: Child Safety Concern
Include:
* your name
* child’s name
* session ID (if available)
* brief description
We investigate all safety concerns within 24 hours.

If a child is in immediate danger
Contact emergency services in your country first.

8. What Happens When Your Child Turns 18

Turning 18 triggers an important account transition. Once the young user turns 18, they may act as their own guardian because they are now a legal adult.

Immediate changes
On their 18th birthday:
* The young user becomes the legal account owner
* Guardian permissions convert to view-only
* The user must accept the adult Terms of Use
* They may set up their own Stripe account for payouts

30-day guardian grace period
For 30 days after the birthday, guardians can still:
* view messages
* view recording history
* view past bookings and payments

Guardians can no longer:
* manage bookings
* adjust settings
* access earnings
* cancel sessions
After 30 days, guardian view-access ends automatically.

Notifications
Both guardian and young user will receive notices:
* 30 days before the 18th birthday
* 7 days before
* On the day of the birthday
* At the end of the 30-day grace period

Payout switching
Young adults may choose to:
A) Keep payouts flowing to the guardian’s Stripe account (default), or
B) Switch to their own Stripe Express account.

Stripe switching restrictions
Users can only switch when:
✓ No pending payouts

✓ No active disputes

✓ No outstanding platform fees or chargebacks

✓ All recent bookings have been fully paid out

✓ No refunds are still being processed
These rules protect earnings and ensure accurate financial reporting.

9. Managing or Closing a Young User’s Account

Guardians may close a child’s account directly in the app.

Delete an account
Go to:
Settings → Account → Delete Account

Pending payouts
Deletion is blocked if payouts are still processing in Stripe.
If your minor is a guruu, please wait until all payouts have completed.

Upcoming bookings
If your minor is a learner, you can delete an account even with upcoming sessions booked. However:
* each provider’s cancellation policy applies to the booking and this determines the amount of any refund, and
* you will be shown which bookings will be cancelled and how refunds will be handled

What is deleted

Once deletion is confirmed:
* profile
* booking history
* messages
* session recordings (except tho\se retained for compliance)
* preferences
Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
Support cannot delete or restore accounts.
All deletions must be completed in Settings.
Support cannot override pending payouts or cancellation rules.

Guruu FAQs

Getting started
Guruu connects you with learners around the world who want to learn from your experience. It’s free to join, and you can teach from anywhere with an internet connection.
Creating your profile
Your profile is your shopfront. Add a great photo, a short bio, and a clear list of what you teach. Be genuine — honest profiles build trust and attract the right learners.
Setting your rate
You decide your hourly rate and availability. The minimum is AUD $25 per hour, but there’s no upper limit. You keep 85% of your session fee, minus Stripe’s processing fees.
How payments work
Learners pay in advance through Guruu. Funds are held securely until the session is complete, then released automatically to your account.
Video sessions
All sessions run through Guruu’s built-in video platform (powered by Twilio) — reliable, secure, and simple to use. Every session is recorded for safety and review.
Cancellations

Each Service Provider (“Guruu”) can set your own cancellation policy. We offer three cancellation policy options—Flexible, Moderate, or Strict—which can be updated at any time in their account settings.

The applicable cancellation policy for a session is the one in effect at the time the booking is confirmed (when payment has been received by Guruu).

If a Guruu changes their cancellation policy after a booking is confirmed, the original policy—the one active at the time of confirmation—continues to apply to that booking.

The selected cancellation policy is always displayed on the Guruu’s public profile page, so learners can review it before booking.

If you cancel a booking, your learner receives a full refund. Frequent cancellations may affect your ranking.

Taxes & insurance
You’re an independent provider, not an employee. This means you manage your own taxes and insurance. See our Payment Policy for more detail.
Building your reputation
After each session, learners can leave a review. Positive feedback helps you attract more bookings and raise your rates over time.

Terms of use

Effective Date: November 27, 2025

Thank you for being part of the Guruu community. These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of Guruu.co, its mobile applications, and related services (collectively, “Guruu,” “the Platform,” “we,” or “us”).

By accessing or using Guruu, you agree to these Terms and all policies that form part of them, including the Privacy Policy, Community Standards, Payment Policy, and Intellectual Property Policy (collectively, the “Platform Policies”).
These Platform Policies are incorporated by reference and have the same legal force as these Terms.
If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the Platform.

1. Key Terms

  • Learner (User / Buyer): A user who books and pays for sessions.

  • Guruu (Service Provider / Seller): A user who offers their time and expertise for a fee.

  • Guardian / Parent: An adult who creates or manages an account on behalf of a minor (under 18 years old). The guardian is the legal contracting party responsible for the minor’s activity, payments, and compliance with these Terms.

  • Booking: The act of reserving a session through the Platform.

  • Session: A one-on-one meeting between a Learner and a Guruu conducted via the Guruu video system.

Creating an account on Guruu is free.

2. Eligibility & Account Responsibilities

  • You must be at least 15 years old to participate as a Service Provider (“Guruu”). For example, a high-school or middle-school student may tutor younger children, provided they comply with Guruu’s guidelines and local laws.

  • All users under 18, whether Learners or Guruus, must have their account created and managed by a parent or legal guardian.

  • The guardian is the legal contracting party and is responsible for all payments, conduct, and compliance with these Terms. Guruu may request verification or proof of parental consent at any time.

  • You are responsible for maintaining accurate information and keeping your login credentials secure.

  • Creating multiple accounts, impersonating others, or using Guruu for fraudulent purposes is strictly prohibited.

  • Guruu reserves the right to suspend or terminate any account that violates these Terms or related policies.

2.1 Account Deletion

If you request to delete your account, Guruu will deactivate your profile and remove or anonymise personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy. However, deleting your account does not delete session recordings, booking records, dispute logs, or messages that Guruu is required to retain for:

  • safety investigations,

  • dispute resolution,

  • chargeback defence,

  • legal or compliance obligations.

Recordings linked to past bookings remain accessible to the Service Provider for the applicable retention period (up to 180 days, or longer if safety-flagged), even if the buyer’s account has been deleted.
This ensures fairness, evidence preservation, and compliance with banking and regulatory rules.

3. User-Generated Content (UGC)

Guruu is a user-generated content (UGC) platform. All content uploaded by users—including text, photos, videos, and session materials—belongs to the user who created it.

By posting content on Guruu, you agree that:

  • You own or have the legal right to share the content.

  • You grant Guruu a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable licence to host, display, reproduce, and distribute your content as necessary to operate, promote, and improve the Platform.

  • You waive any moral rights to the extent permitted by law.

  • You grant Guruu the right to use your reviews, testimonials, or other public content for promotional or informational purposes.

  • You are solely responsible for your content and for ensuring that it complies with intellectual-property laws and our Community Standards.

  • Guruu does not pre-screen, supervise, or endorse user-generated material and assumes no responsibility or liability for content posted by users.

We may remove or restrict content that violates laws or Platform Policies.
If you believe your intellectual-property rights have been violated, please see our Intellectual Property Claims Policy.

4. Pricing & Payments

  • The minimum booking rate is USD $20 (or the equivalent amount in local currency) per hour.

  • Learners pay for sessions in advance through Guruu’s secure payment system.

  • Upon completion, Guruu releases 85% of the session fee to the Guruu, after deducting Guruu’s platform commission; and credit-card processing fees imposed by third-party providers (e.g., Stripe).

  • Payments and communication must occur through the Guruu Platform. Attempting to pay, contact, or schedule sessions outside Guruu may result in suspension or permanent removal.

    Guruu acts as a limited payment-collection agent to facilitate transactions but is not a party to the contract between Learners and Guruus.

    All payments, refunds, and commissions are subject to the Payment Policy and applicable laws.

    Guruu may withhold or report earnings as required by local or international tax authorities. Guruus are solely responsible for declaring and paying their own taxes.

5. Bookings & Cancellations

  • Guruus are expected to honour confirmed bookings. Repeated or unjustified cancellations may impact account status.

  • Learners may cancel sessions in accordance with the Guruu’s chosen cancellation policy.

  • If a Learner misses a session without notice, the full payment may be released to the Guruu.

  • Refunds are processed according to the Payment Policy and applicable consumer laws.

  • Learners must raise any dispute or refund request within three (3) days of session completion.

6. Service Disruptions, Force Majeure & Technical Issues

  • Guruu uses Twilio and other third-party tools to deliver video conferencing and messaging services.

While we strive for uninterrupted access, technical issues can occur due to factors outside Guruu’s control, including:

  • internet outages, device or hardware failure;

  • third-party service interruptions; or

  • events of force majeure such as natural disasters, cyber attacks, labour disputes, or regulatory restrictions.

Guruu is not responsible for loss of service, earnings, or data due to such disruptions.

If a session is materially affected by a verified technical issue not caused by either party, Guruu will review the case. Guruus agree to either: re-run the session at no additional cost, or offer a refund, at Guruu’s discretion.

7. Regulatory Compliance (Cross-Border Use)

Guruu Labs LLC is incorporated in the United States and operates globally.
Users are responsible for ensuring that their use of the Platform is lawful within their own jurisdiction, including compliance with export controls, age restrictions, and professional licensing requirements.

8. Reviews & Ratings

  • Learners can review and rate Guruus after sessions.

  • Reviews must be honest, respectful, and compliant with our Community Standards.

  • Guruu may remove or moderate reviews that are false, defamatory, or abusive.

  • By posting a review, you grant Guruu permission to display it publicly for promotional or informational use.

9. Conduct & Prohibited Activities

All users must:

  • Communicate respectfully and professionally;

  • Keep all interactions and transactions within Guruu; and

  • Follow all applicable laws and the Community Standards.

You must not:

  • Offer or request illegal, explicit, or unethical services;

  • Circumvent fees or payments;

  • Use Guruu to send spam or collect data;

  • Engage in plagiarism, impersonation, or IP violations; or

  • Interfere with platform security or manipulate the review system.

  • Share or distribute session recordings without written consent from all participants, except for guardian review of a minor’s session.

Violations may result in suspension, removal, or legal action.

10. Dispute Resolution, Mediation & Arbitration

Guruu encourages Learners and Guruus to resolve disagreements directly wherever possible.

If a dispute cannot be resolved, Guruu may, at its discretion, review the matter and determine appropriate actions, including partial or full refunds, account adjustments, or other remedies.

10.1 AI-Assisted Review
Guruu may use artificial intelligence or automated tools to assist in evaluating evidence, communication history, or session recordings to support a fair outcome.
All AI-assisted assessments are reviewed and confirmed by a human moderator before a decision is finalised.

10.2 Platform Mediation Finality
Guruu’s decision in a mediation context is final for Platform purposes, meaning it determines payout, refund, or account-status outcomes within Guruu.
This internal decision does not limit either party’s right to pursue legal or regulatory remedies outside the Platform.

10.3 Arbitration Requirement
Before commencing court proceedings, both parties agree to attempt mediation or binding arbitration in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, conducted in English under the Arbitration Rules of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA).
The arbitration award may be entered in any court having jurisdiction, but all proceedings must occur in Victoria, Australia.
Users waive any right to participate in a class action or to bring claims in any other jurisdiction.

10.4 Liability Disclaimer
Guruu is a neutral facilitator and is not legally responsible for the conduct or outcomes of user-to-user interactions, including the quality, timing, or accuracy of any service delivered by users. Guruu is not liable for any loss arising from a user’s failure to download or retain copies of their session recordings before deletion under the retention schedule described in these Terms.

11. Independent Contractor Relationship

  • Guruus are independent contractors, not employees, partners, or agents of Guruu Labs LLC.

  • They are solely responsible for their representations, taxes, and maintaining any professional licensing or insurance required for their field.

  • Guruu does not control or guarantee the content, quality, timing, or outcome of services delivered by Guruus.

12. Platform Disclaimer & Limitation of Liability

  • Guruu provides a neutral marketplace that connects users.

  • We do not supervise, direct, or control users’ behaviour and are not responsible for any acts, omissions, or representations made by users on or off the Platform.

  • We do not guarantee the quality, accuracy, or reliability of any user-provided content or service.

  • Use of Guruu is at your own risk.

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • Guruu Labs LLC and its affiliates are not liable for damages, including loss of income, data, goodwill, or reputation, arising from use of the Platform or third-party tools.

  • Guruu’s total aggregate liability to any user shall not exceed the lesser of AUD $100 or the total Platform fees paid by that user during the preceding twelve (12) months.

13. Insurance & Professional Responsibility

Guruu does not provide indemnity or liability insurance for users.
Service Providers are encouraged to maintain appropriate insurance and comply with professional licensing standards relevant to their field.

14. Data Protection & Privacy

Your use of Guruu is governed by our Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy, which explain how we collect, use, and protect information.
By using Guruu, you consent to:

  • session recordings for safety and dispute resolution;

  • storage and processing of personal data in the United States or other jurisdictions; and

  • data retention and cross-border transfer as described in the Privacy Policy.

14.1 Session Recording Review & Evidence Use

To maintain a safe learning environment, protect users, and resolve disputes fairly, sessions on Guruu may be automatically recorded. By using the Platform, you understand and agree to the following:

Limited Access to Recordings
Session recordings are accessible only to:
(a) authorised Guruu staff for safety reviews, quality assurance, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution;
(b) Guruu’s payment processor (such as Stripe) when necessary to investigate or resolve a payment dispute or chargeback; and
(c) the buyer’s or provider’s issuing bank, if Stripe forwards the evidence as part of a chargeback review.

Purpose Limitation
Recordings are used solely for:

  • verifying session attendance and completion
  • resolving platform disputes (Tier 0, Tier 1, Tier 2)
  • responding to chargebacks
  • enforcing Community Standards
  • investigating safety concerns
  • compliance with legal obligations

No Public Disclosure
Recordings are never used for marketing, never made public, and never shared with other users except as required for dispute resolution.

Chargebacks
If you file a chargeback or external payment dispute, you authorise Guruu to submit session recordings, logs, communications, account activity, and other relevant data to our payment processor and, where applicable, your issuing bank.

Guardian-Managed Accounts
If a learner or guruu is under 18, only the registered parent or guardian may access or receive information relating to the session recording, dispute evidence, or chargeback documentation. Minors may report concerns but are not the legal decision-maker.

Recordings may be archived, compressed, or migrated between secure storage systems during the retention period, provided user access rules remain unchanged. Such changes do not alter the permitted uses or confidentiality obligations described in these Terms.

14.2 Session Recording Retention & Storage

All sessions on Guruu are automatically recorded. Recording is a mandatory safety, quality, and dispute-resolution requirement for anyone using the Platform. By using Guruu, you consent to the creation, storage, and restricted review of session recordings as described below.

Retention Period

Session recordings are retained for up to 180 days from the date of the session to allow for:

  • dispute resolution (Tier 0–Tier 2)

  • chargeback defence

  • guardian oversight for minor accounts

  • safety and policy investigations

After 30 days, recordings may be archived in a lower-resolution format or moved to secure alternative storage to manage capacity.

Recordings may be deleted after 180 days unless the session is subject to a safety flag, legal request, or other compliance requirement. In serious cases—such as suspected abuse, grooming, harassment, or criminal behaviour—recordings and related logs may be retained for 5–7 years consistent with legal and child-safety best practices.

User Download

Recordings may be available for download by authorised buyers, guardians, or providers. Guruu does not guarantee permanent access and may delete recordings in accordance with this policy. Users are encouraged to save local copies for their own reference.

Restrictions on Sharing

Session recordings may not be shared publicly, posted online, or distributed to third parties without the written consent of all participants, except where a parent or guardian reviews recordings involving a minor.
Unauthorised sharing or misuse of recordings may result in account suspension or legal action.

Access & Review

Recordings may be accessed only by:

  • participants in the session (buyer/guardian and provider);

  • authorised Guruu staff for dispute resolution, safety review, fraud prevention, or compliance;

  • Stripe, issuing banks, or law-enforcement agencies when necessary to resolve a payment dispute or legal matter.

Recordings are never used for marketing or public distribution.

15. Recording Policy Summary

To maintain a safe, transparent, and trustworthy learning environment, all sessions conducted through Guruu are automatically recorded. Recording is a mandatory feature of the Platform and is required for dispute resolution, safety, quality assurance, and chargeback defence. By using Guruu, you agree to the following summary of how session recordings are handled.

15.1 Why Sessions Are Recorded

Recordings help ensure that:

  • sessions are delivered safely and professionally;

  • disputes can be reviewed fairly and based on evidence;

  • minors are protected through guardian oversight;

  • chargebacks and fraud claims can be resolved using verifiable session history; and

  • learners can revisit important concepts or instructions shared during their session.

Recordings are never used for marketing or public distribution.

15.2 Who Can Access Recordings

Recordings are accessible only to:

  • the learner or, for minors, their registered parent or guardian;

  • the Service Provider who delivered the session;

  • authorised Guruu staff involved in dispute resolution, safety investigations, fraud prevention, or compliance;

  • Stripe, issuing banks, or law-enforcement agencies where necessary to resolve a chargeback, fraud report, or legal request.

Recordings may not be publicly shared or reposted without the written consent of all participants, except where a parent or guardian reviews a child’s session.

15.3 How Long Recordings Are Stored

Recordings are retained for up to 180 days from the date of the session. Retention occurs in two phases:

  • First 30 days:
    Recordings are stored in full quality and available for download.

  • Day 30–180:
    Recordings may be archived in a lower-resolution format or moved to secure alternative storage to manage capacity, while remaining suitable for review, disputes, and chargebacks.

After 180 days, recordings may be permanently deleted unless the session is subject to:

  • a safety or misconduct investigation;

  • a legal or law-enforcement request; or

  • other compliance requirements.

In serious or safety-critical cases (e.g., harm, abuse, grooming, or criminal behaviour), recordings and related logs may be retained securely for 5–7 years in accordance with child-safety and legal best practice.

15.4 Account Deletion and Recording Access

Deleting your Guruu account does not delete session recordings or booking records that Guruu is required to retain for safety, dispute, chargeback, or compliance purposes. If you delete your account:

  • recordings remain accessible to the Service Provider for the applicable retention period;

  • Guruu may continue to store recordings until the retention period expires;

  • your personal information in connection with the account may be anonymised in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

15.5 Downloading Recordings

Recordings may be available for download from your dashboard shortly after a session ends. Users are encouraged to save recordings locally for future reference, as Guruu does not guarantee permanent access and may delete recordings after the retention period.

16. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Guruu Labs LLC, its affiliates, officers, and employees from any claims, damages, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from:

  • your use or misuse of the Platform;

  • your violation of these Terms or applicable law; or

  • your infringement of another user’s rights.

17. Modifications & Policy Updates

Policy Updates
Guruu may amend these Terms or any Platform Policy (including the Community Standards, Payment Policy, and Privacy Policy) from time to time. Changes take effect once published on Guruu.co. We will notify users via email or in-platform notice of any material updates.
Material updates—those that significantly affect user rights or obligations—will be notified via email or in-platform notice.
Minor or editorial changes, such as improvements to wording, formatting, or examples, may be made without separate notice.
Continued use of the Platform after any update constitutes acceptance of the revised version.

Community standards

Overview

Guruu is a global network of tutors, mentors, instructors, consultants, coaches, and service professionals who use the platform to share knowledge and empower others.

Our community thrives on diversity, respect, and professionalism. Every interaction—whether in a live session or online communication—contributes to the culture we build together.

Guiding Principle

Guruu is a platform for sharing knowledge responsibly. In short:

If it’s illegal, don’t do it here. If it’s unethical, we reserve the right to act.

We are not here to police ideas or personal ethics, but we act swiftly to protect user safety—especially for minors—and to comply with the law.

These Community Standards outline the behaviour and content expectations for everyone using Guruu. They are not laws, but guiding principles that reflect our shared values of respect, safety, acceptance, and integrity.

These Community Standards form part of Guruu’s Terms of Use.

By creating an account, posting content, or participating in a session, you agree to comply with these Standards in addition to all other policies that make up Guruu’s Terms.

These standards evolve as our community grows. The examples below illustrate prohibited behaviours but are not exhaustive. If you encounter conduct or content that violates these guidelines, please report it to help@guruu.co.

Definition: In this document, “learner” refers to any user who books and pays for a session on Guruu.

1. Integrity and Authenticity

Trust is the foundation of the Guruu marketplace. Every profile, session, and message must represent you and your skills truthfully.

Do not:

  • Use a fake name, photo, gender, or location.

  • Present forged or false documents when verifying identity.

  • Misstate your qualifications, experience, or education.

  • Offer licensed or regulated services without the required credentials.

  • Copy another user’s profile text, media, or branding.

  • Change agreed pricing outside the platform or after confirmation (“bait-and-switch”).

  • Allow another person to attend or appear in a booked session without the learner’s written consent.

  • Use non-original photos, videos, or promotional materials.

2. Spam and Platform Misuse

Guruu’s messaging and booking tools exist to support genuine learning and collaboration.

Do not:

  • Send unsolicited or repetitive messages unrelated to an active session.

  • Distribute mass, promotional, or misleading communications.

  • Use Guruu messages to advertise outside websites, products, or services.

3. Prohibited Services

Guruu welcomes a wide range of knowledge categories — but certain services and topics are strictly prohibited for legal, ethical, or safety reasons.

3.1 Illegal or Financially Risky Services

Do not offer or request:

  • Any illegal service or assistance with unlawful acts.

  • Fake or forged documents (IDs, licences, bank statements, etc.).

  • Services requiring access to another user’s financial accounts or data.

  • Loans, donations, or investment schemes.

  • Trading signals, financial forecasts, or high-risk speculative advice.

3.2 Piracy, Hacking, and Third-Party Violations

Do not offer or request:

  • Hacking, cracking, or account-recovery services.

  • Pirated or unlicensed software, media, or templates.

  • Any service that breaches a third party’s terms of service.

3.3 Misleading or Fraudulent Services

Do not post or request:

  • Fake reviews, testimonials, or engagement (followers, likes, views, etc.).

  • Deepfakes or AI-generated content designed to deceive.

  • Services guaranteeing outcomes beyond your control.

3.4 Education and Tutoring

Guruu exists to support genuine learning and skill development. We do not monitor or judge the academic ethics of how knowledge is applied outside the platform.

However, all activity must remain lawful, age-appropriate, and safe.
If a session involves a minor, Service Providers must conduct themselves professionally at all times. Any report of inappropriate behaviour — including nudity, sexual content, or other boundary violations during a video session — will trigger immediate review and may result in account suspension or reporting to authorities.

Guruu supports genuine learning and coaching. Tutors may guide, explain, or review work, but we ask that you do not complete graded assignments, exams, or applications on behalf of learners, as doing so breaches academic integrity.

4. Allowed and Restricted Subjects

Guruu is a marketplace for the exchange of knowledge — a place where people teach, mentor, and share skills in good faith.
Subjects listed on Guruu must always reflect legitimate areas of learning, creativity, or personal development.

4.1 Allowed Subjects

You may create listings for educational, creative, or practical topics, including but not limited to:

  • Academic subjects: mathematics, chemistry, physics, languages, history

  • Creative skills: writing, photography, painting, music, design

  • Practical trades: hair braiding, carpentry, gardening, cooking

  • Personal and spiritual development: mindfulness, meditation, tarot, astrology (as cultural or educational content)

  • Professional coaching and consulting: business, marketing, leadership, financial literacy

  • Health and wellness: yoga, nutrition, personal training, medical study, and wellbeing discussions — shared responsibly and never as a substitute for professional care.

Each listing must clearly describe the skill or knowledge being taught — not the person delivering it.

4.2 Restricted or Prohibited Subjects

Guruu does not allow any subject, keyword, or material that:

  • Contains or implies pornography, sexual services, or fetish content.
    Examples of blocked or filtered terms include (but are not limited to):
    “sex,” “porn,” “escort,” “cam,” “fetish,” “nude,” “boobs,” “blonde/blond,” or any slang referring to body parts or sexual activity.

  • Promotes or implies romantic companionship for hire, “dating advice” of an erotic or explicit nature, or “adult chat.”

  • Involves illegal activity, drugs, weapons, or hate content.

  • Offers or requests fraudulent, falsified, or impersonated work — such as forged documents, fake credentials, or services that impersonate another person in exams or formal processes.

  • Guruu supports genuine learning and coaching. Tutors may guide, explain, or review work, but are expected to uphold honesty in how knowledge is shared.

  • Uses disguised or misspelled keywords to evade moderation.

Any listing containing or resembling such content will be automatically blocked or removed.
Repeated or deliberate attempts to post restricted subjects may result in account suspension.

4.3 Moderation and Detection

Guruu uses a combination of:

  • Hard-term filtering (specific banned words or phrases),

  • AI-assisted classification to identify adult, violent, or unsafe content, and

  • Human review for edge cases or appeals.

This approach ensures genuine diversity of subjects while maintaining safety and legality.

4.4 Category Levels

To help learners find appropriate content, Guruu organises subjects by level:

  • Primary / Junior School

  • Middle School

  • Secondary / High School

  • Adult / Professional

  • Personal Development / Lifestyle

5. Objectionable Conduct

Guruu is an inclusive community. We do not tolerate language or behaviour that targets individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, marital status, or political affiliation.

Do not:

  • Use profane, violent, or dehumanising language.

  • Publish or request discriminatory content.

  • Refuse to work with someone because of a protected characteristic.

Adult Content and Sexual Activity

Explicit sexual or pornographic material has no place on Guruu. Violations are reported to relevant authorities.

Do not:

  • Share or request nudity or sexually explicit content.

  • Offer or request sexual, fetish, or erotic services or chats.

  • Threaten, incite, or encourage violence or unlawful acts.

  • Use Guruu to organise or promote criminal activity.

Self-Harm

If you encounter someone expressing suicidal thoughts or intent to self-harm, encourage them to seek professional help immediately. For global support resources, visit OpenCounseling.com/suicide-hotlines.

Violence and Criminal Behaviour

Do not:

  • Threaten, incite, or encourage violence or unlawful acts.
  • Use Guruu to organise or promote criminal activity.

6. Video Sessions and Recordings

All Guruu sessions are automatically recorded for safety and dispute resolution.
Recordings are available to both parties via their dashboards and may be deleted periodically to manage storage capacity.

For learners under the age of 18, Guruu’s Terms of Use require that a parent or legal guardian be associated with the minor’s account. All guardians have access to the video sessions and recordings of their minors as part of these Terms, ensuring transparency and child safety.

Do not:

  • Share, post, or distribute session recordings without written consent from every participant.

  • Use recordings for public or promotional purposes without authorisation.

All Guruu sessions are automatically recorded for safety, transparency, moderation, and dispute resolution.

Recordings are available to both parties via their dashboards and may be deleted periodically to manage storage capacity, unless they are needed for a dispute, safety investigation, or chargeback.

For learners under the age of 18, Guruu’s Terms of Use require that a parent or legal guardian be associated with the minor’s account. All guardians have access to the video sessions and recordings of their minors as part of these Terms, ensuring transparency and child safety. Minors may report concerns, but only guardians may take binding action in a dispute or chargeback.

Review of Recordings

Session recordings may be reviewed by:

  • Authorised Guruu staff for safety checks, policy enforcement, or dispute resolution

  • Human reviewers during Tier 2 dispute assessment

  • Our payment processor (Stripe) when required to resolve a payment dispute or chargeback

  • The issuing bank, via Stripe, as part of the chargeback evidence process

Recordings are reviewed only for legitimate safety, compliance, and dispute-resolution purposes and are never shared publicly.

Do Not:

  • Share, post, or distribute session recordings without written consent from every participant

  • Use recordings for public or promotional purposes without authorisation

  • Attempt to edit, falsify, or manipulate session footage

  • Delete recordings relevant to an ongoing dispute, investigation, or chargeback

Violation of these rules may result in suspension or permanent removal from the Platform.

7. Reviews and Ratings

Reviews help learners make informed choices and help Guruus grow their reputations.

Reviews must be:

  • Honest, factual, and relevant to the session experience.

  • Free of personal attacks, harassment, or privacy violations.

If a review violates these Standards, it may be challenged or removed at Guruu’s discretion.

8. Reporting Violations

Maintaining trust requires shared responsibility.
If you observe behaviour or content that breaches these standards, report it immediately to help@guruu.co.

By using Guruu, you agree to follow these Community Standards as a condition of your use of the Platform.
Violations may result in content removal, suspension, or permanent account termination.
These Community Standards are legally binding and form part of Guruu’s Terms of Use, available at gurru.co/terms.

Payment Policy

Dispute, Payout, Refund & Tax Policy

This Policy forms part of the Guruu Terms of Service (“the Platform,” “we,” “our,” or “us”). It explains how payments, booking fees, disputes, refunds, and taxes are handled for transactions processed through Stripe, our third-party payment provider.

1. Pre-Booking Confirmation

Before completing any booking, Buyers must confirm that they understand and agree to Guruu’s refund and dispute rules. This confirmation appears in a pop-up window during the booking process and must be accepted before payment.

By ticking the confirmation checkbox, Buyers acknowledge that refunds are only available if:

  • The Guruu did not meet agreed requirements that were clearly written and confirmed before the session;

  • The Guruu was a no-show;

  • The Guruu breached Guruu’s Community Standards; or

  • A technical issue not caused by the Buyer occurred (e.g., the Guruu’s internet failure, hardware malfunction, or a verified outage of Guruu/Twilio).

Refunds are not available for reasons including, but not limited to:

  • changing your mind

  • personality mismatch

  • disliking the Guruu’s delivery style

  • not achieving the outcome you hoped for

A timestamped record of this acknowledgement is stored with each booking.

2. Payment Handling

All payments are processed securely through Stripe. When a Buyer books a Service, the full amount is charged immediately and placed in temporary escrow by Stripe on behalf of the Platform.

Funds are released only when:

  • The Buyer confirms the Service was completed;

  • The Buyer takes no action within a Do Nothing review window (see Section 4); or

  • A dispute is raised in accordance with this Policy.

2.1 Session Recordings & Evidence Use

Guruu sessions are automatically recorded for safety, transparency, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution.

By using the Platform, both Buyers and Service Providers consent to Guruu reviewing session recordings for:

  • verifying delivery or non-delivery of the session

  • resolving disputes (Tier 0, Tier 1, Tier 2)

  • safety investigations and policy violations

  • fraud prevention and compliance audits

  • responding to chargebacks or external payment disputes

Recordings may be reviewed by authorised Guruu staff and may be provided to Stripe or the issuing bank solely for the purpose of resolving a payment dispute or chargeback.

As part of a dispute or chargeback investigation, Guruu may also provide:

  • session logs (join/leave times, connection events)

  • chat and communication history

  • evidence uploads

  • fulfilment records

  • dispute timeline (Tier 0 → Tier 1 → Tier 2)

  • the Buyer’s pre-booking acknowledgement

  • proof of delivery or non-delivery

Recordings are never shared publicly and are not used for marketing.

For accounts belonging to minors, only the registered guardian may receive dispute-related notifications, outcomes, or evidence.

3. Platform Commission, Booking Fee & Processing Fees

For each confirmed booking:

  • A non-refundable USD $3.00 booking fee is charged. This covers platform operations, fraud prevention, escrow, dispute handling, and AI mediation systems.

  • A 15% platform commission is deducted from the gross booking amount.

  • Stripe card-processing fees (2.9% + USD $0.30 domestic; 4.4% + USD $0.30 international) are also deducted from payout.

The Service Provider receives the net amount after commission, booking fee, Stripe fees, and applicable taxes.

4. Buyer Review Period

Immediately after the session ends, the Buyer must choose how to finalise the booking.
The Buyer sees three options:

4.1 Pay Now

Selecting Pay Now means the Buyer confirms the session was delivered.

  • The payout is queued and processed to the Service Provider within approximately 24 hours.

  • The transaction becomes final for Platform purposes.

  • The Buyer permanently loses the right to dispute this booking.

4.2 Do Nothing

If the Buyer needs time to assess the session, they may select Do Nothing.

  • This action creates a 72-hour review window.

  • Within those 72 hours, the Buyer may still:

    • select Pay Now, or

    • open a dispute (which immediately freezes funds and moves the booking to Tier 0).

If the Buyer takes no action by the end of the 72-hour window:

  • The booking auto-finalises as if Pay Now was selected.

  • The payout is processed within approximately 24 hours (around 96 hours after session end).

“Do Nothing” can only be selected once and cannot be extended, restarted, or reactivated.

4.3 Open Dispute

The Buyer may open a dispute immediately after the session ends.

  • A dedicated dispute chat is opened.

  • Funds remain frozen in escrow.

  • Tier 0 negotiation begins.

  • The booking enters the full Tier 0 → Tier 1 → Tier 2 process.

5. Internal Dispute Resolution

Disputes may be raised:

  • immediately after the session ends, OR

  • at any time during a Do Nothing review window, provided Pay Now has not already been selected.

Guruu uses a three-tier dispute process:

Tier 0 — Direct negotiation

The Buyer and Guruu attempt to resolve the issue in a dedicated dispute chat.

This period lasts up to 72 hours, unless escalated earlier.

If a dispute is opened during a Do Nothing review window, the window immediately ends and funds remain frozen.

Tier 1 — AI Mediation

If Tier 0 fails, or after 72 hours automatically, Guruu’s AI mediation system assists with:

  • summarising issues

  • analysing fairness

  • suggesting settlement percentages

  • clarifying missing information

AI does not make decisions or process payments.

Tier 2 — Human Review

A dispute automatically escalates to Tier 2 if:

  • negotiation and AI mediation fail, or

  • video evidence is provided or required, or

  • safety or policy concerns are detected.

A Guruu specialist reviews:

  • all chat messages

  • logs and timestamps

  • evidence uploads

  • session recordings

  • relevant platform data

The Platform’s internal decision is final for Platform purposes.
Buyers retain the right to seek a bank-level chargeback (see Section 6).

For minor accounts, only the registered guardian may participate in or receive dispute outcomes.

6. Card Disputes and Chargebacks

A Buyer may dispute a charge directly with their bank.

If a chargeback occurs, the booking enters External Dispute status, and:

  • Stripe withdraws the disputed amount from the Platform;

  • All related payouts are frozen;

  • Guruu submits evidence including:

    • the Buyer’s pre-booking acknowledgement

    • session recordings

    • session logs

    • chat and dispute-room history

    • any evidence uploaded by either party

    • fulfilment records

    • Tier 0 / Tier 1 / Tier 2 timeline

    • proof of delivery or non-delivery

If the account belongs to a minor, only the registered guardian receives chargeback-related communications.

Buyers who bypass Guruu’s internal dispute process may face account restrictions or be required to use verified payment methods.

Once the issuing bank makes a decision:

  • If the Platform wins, funds are restored;

  • If the Platform loses, the Buyer is refunded;

  • Guruu may recover losses from the Service Provider if the cause was their non-performance.

7. Refunds

Refunds are assessed case-by-case and must fall under the valid reasons listed in Section 1.

If approved:

  • Refunds are processed minus Stripe’s non-refundable processing fees and the USD $3.00 booking fee.

  • Stripe does not return processing fees to the Platform.

  • The Platform may retain its commission to cover administrative and operational costs.

Example:
If you paid USD $100.00 and Stripe fees were USD $3.20, your refund would be USD $96.80.

If the Buyer is a no-show, the Guruu may receive the full payout according to the cancellation policy.

8. Cancellation by Service Provider

If a Guruu cancels a confirmed booking, the Buyer receives a full refund, including the booking fee and card-processing fees.
Additional penalties or restrictions may apply to the Guruu’s account.

9. Cancellations

Refunds depend on the Guruu’s cancellation policy, which is displayed at the time of booking.

Refunds under the cancellation policy exclude:

  • the non-refundable USD $3.00 booking fee

  • Stripe’s non-refundable processing fees

10. Taxes

The Platform may be required to collect and remit taxes (sales tax, GST, VAT, etc.) depending on location.

Collected taxes:

  • are held on behalf of tax authorities

  • are not Platform revenue

  • may affect displayed prices

10.1 Service Provider Tax Responsibilities

Service Providers on Guruu act as independent contractors, not employees, agents, or representatives of Guruu Labs LLC.
Each Service Provider is solely responsible for:

  • declaring and paying their own income tax, GST, VAT, or other applicable taxes;

  • maintaining any required business registrations;

  • complying with local tax laws in their country or region;

  • keeping appropriate financial and tax records; and

  • understanding their own tax obligations in relation to earnings received through the Platform.

Guruu does not withhold income tax on behalf of Service Providers and does not provide tax, legal, or accounting advice.

Where required by law, Guruu may collect, withhold, or remit transactional taxes (e.g., GST/VAT on services or platform fees), but this does not affect the Service Provider’s responsibility to declare their own earnings.

11. Fraud and Unauthorized Payments

Stripe provides fraud screening and authentication tools.
The Platform is not responsible for fraudulent or unauthorized card use beyond protections provided by Stripe and card networks.

12. Finality of Payouts

Once a Buyer selects Pay Now, or a Do Nothing review window expires and the booking auto-finalises, the payout is processed within approximately 24 hours.

After payout is released, the transaction is considered final for Platform purposes, unless reversed by a valid card-network chargeback.

13. Acceptance

By using the Platform, Buyers and Service Providers acknowledge and agree to this Policy, including the pre-booking confirmation requirement in Section 1.

4.4 Restrictions on sharing

Recordings may not be shared publicly, reposted, or distributed outside Guruu without the written consent of all participants, except where a parent or guardian reviews a child’s session.

Unauthorised sharing may result in suspension or legal action.

5. Safety Reports & Concerns

Users may report behaviour that violates our Terms or Community Standards.
Minors may submit a “Something felt wrong” concern, which is sent privately to their guardian.

Guruu uses automated tools and limited human review (where necessary) to assess safety alerts.
To protect user privacy, outcomes of internal investigations may not be shared.

6. Data Retention

We retain personal data only as long as necessary to:

  • operate the Platform,

  • meet legal, tax, and regulatory requirements,

  • resolve disputes and chargebacks, and

  • prevent fraud or abuse.

Retention examples:

  • Session recordings: up to 180 days, longer for safety cases.

  • Booking and payment records: typically 6–7 years (financial requirements).

  • Messages and dispute logs: retained as required for fraud prevention and legal compliance.

  • Account information: retained until deletion or anonymisation, except where retention is legally required.

After expiration of a retention period, data is securely deleted or anonymised.

6.1 Account Deletion

If you delete your Guruu account, we will:

  • deactivate your profile,

  • remove or anonymise personal data where possible, and

  • retain data we are legally required to keep.

Deleting your account does not delete:

  • session recordings still within the 180-day retention period,

  • booking and transaction records,

  • dispute logs,

  • safety reports,

  • chargeback-related evidence.

Recordings remain accessible to the Service Provider for the remainder of the retention window.

7. Users Under 18

  • Accounts for minors must be created and managed by a parent or legal guardian.

  • Guardians have access to the minor’s session recordings and communications.

  • Minors may report concerns but cannot initiate payment actions or disputes.

  • Guruu does not knowingly collect information directly from a minor without guardian consent.

8. Sharing Information with Third Parties

We share personal information only as needed to operate the Platform:

8.1 Service providers

Includes hosting providers, Twilio video services, storage providers, analytics tools, cloud vendors, and payment processors (such as Stripe).

8.2 Legal & compliance

We may share information with law enforcement or regulatory bodies where required by law.

8.3 Marketing & analytics

We use contractual protections and secure transfer mechanisms to ensure your information is handled safely and lawfully.

10. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information.
However, no system is completely secure.
Please maintain strong passwords and do not share account access.

11. Automated Processing & AI Tools

Guruu uses automated tools and artificial intelligence to:

  • summarise dispute information,

  • classify safety-related signals,

  • detect fraud or suspicious behaviour,

  • prepare evidence for chargebacks.

These tools support human reviewers but do not make final decisions about refunds, payouts, or account actions.
All meaningful decisions involve human oversight.

12. Your Rights (EU, UK, and California Residents)

Depending on your location, you may have rights to:

  • access your data,

  • request correction,
